What does it mean to be a code hero? Write your definition and see what your classmates have to say about it. These ideas will help you write your paper. Please make sure not to look at your handout to write this. I want this entry to be in YOUR OWN WORDS!!! It is important for me to see if you really understand what a code hero is before you write your essay.
Thanks... and happy BLOGGING. Mrs. A.

A code hero is a character in a story that the author typically will set reoccurring characteristics for different characters in their stories. In the case of Ernest Hemingway, his code hero's tend to always be male. The code hero seems to be a manly man who is into the rough and tough stuff all masculine men are into. He is the guy who drinks, goes through a string of love affairs, and learns a life lesson within the story. Code hero's are going to be that guy who gambles, who goes to bull fights, who likes to get in fights, and who likes to be surrounded by sports or hunting. They are not the same character in every story by Hemingway, but they all tend to be that manly man. Harry, the character from Hemingway's The Snows of Kilimanjaro, is a guy who likes to drink, have sex, and go hunting. The young waiter from A Well Lighted, Clean Place, was a guy who enjoyed going home to have sex with his wife. The old man was a guy who liked to go out and drink. They are all code hero's, but are still very different from each other.
The code hero in Hemingway’s stories is always a manly man that likes to take things to the extreme. In each of the stories we have read so far in Hemingway’s stories, each of the code heroes come close to death or end up dying. They all have this in common. They all also like to indulge in some sort of pleasure, whether it be gambling, having a lover, or drinking. Also, the code hero in Hemingway’s short stories often do not believe in God. They don’t believe in any kind of afterlife and they think that you should live life to fullest because once you’re gone, you’re gone. They may not be the same person, but they definitely resemble one another.
The Code Hero is always a man in Hemingway's stories. He is a man who stays strong throughout the whole story no matter the consequences. The Code Hero always has a brush with death or in "Snows" case actually dies. What the Code Hero thinks, though, is that they should always live their life to the fullest and never be scared of death, accept it. It is important to the men in Hemingway's stories to live to the fullest because they believe death is the end of everything. They do not believe in an afterlife in anyway. The Code Heroes also always have some sort of pleasure, whether it be alcohol, or lovers. Harry's pleasure was lovers and alcohol. The old man in the cafe's pleasure was alcohol.
A "Hemingway man" identified in each book he produced is a man who takes to extremes, the "man's man." One would typically find a man who's close to death or dying, who had shown, or will show, "grace under pressure." A concept in all Hemingway's stories in which the code hero show's his determination to live, no matter how close to death he is. This is due to the belief that there is no life after death. The code hero in each of Hemingway's stories believes that he must live life to the fullest and for the moment. To bask in the rewards of life IN life, because Death's embrace is the shadow of nothing and nothing he'd have in death.
To be a code hero is to be a man. A manly man. The code hero loves to drink and do manly stuff. Like hunting Kilimanjaro or bullfighting (which is absolutely repulsive). The women does not rule over the house, the code hero does. He's big a strong and can fight and likes to fight. He also is big on gambling. Another part of a code hero is that he's big on women and having love affairs, big on sex. Though the code hero doesn't always hold these qualities, but maybe one or more at a time. For example, in The Snows of Kilimanjaro the code hero was Harry, who was a beautiful example of a code hero, a man who liked to drink, liked to be rich, liked to have love affairs, and to be on the verge or death and still be somewhat relaxed.
Hemingway's code hero's are men in Hemingway's stories that have characteristics of a manly man. He likes to live near the edge, by that I mean they like to do things to the extreme, like skydiving or bull riding. The code hero likes to gamble or drink. The character is usually whorish, because he likes to sleep with a woman here and a woman there. The character is usually cutting it real close to death with everything that he does, or the character may actually have died in the story.
What is a code hero? A code hero is a character that reappears in many stories, under different names. Hemingway infused himself into his code heros. The characters tend to be an All-American man. He drinks, smokes, and laughs at death. Sometimes, you can see Hemingway’s code heros in real life, just look at any professional football player. Many of the Hemingway’s code heros liked to play women. The women are rich, many of the times, they are like the code hero themselves. The code hero’s are a lot like Hemingway, because he hunted, smoked, drank, and played women, also.
A code hero is simply the subject of a story that is somewhat disguised as actually being a hero. Meaning they are the hero is a subliminal way and don't necessarily do things many people would consider heroic. Such as Hemingway's code heroes, who like to drink and are very chauvinistic, for lack of a better word. Most people don't think being a blithering drunk and sleeping around is very heroic, but that is what a code hero is, your own personal definition of a hero.
To be a code hero means to be a "tough guy." An example of a code hero would be someone who enjoys watching fights and drinking alcohol. The code hero could also be a fisherman or a hunter. The code hero would be someone who did activities that manly men did! It seems as if the code heroes would be cocky and full of themselves. They seem like they just care about being tough. The code heroes are also not afraid to die, but they fear death. The code hero has to avoid death no matter what, even though they do activities in which they risk dying. Hemingway's code heroes are not all exactly the same but they have some of the same characteristics.
The Hemingway code hero is normally a single character in a story and is always a man. This man would show manly qualities like drinking, gabling, an interest in bull fights, or a lifestyle were he shows no respect for women. The code hero's may also have sleeping problems and are not scared of death. Hemingway's code hero's are like this because in most cases the code hero's resemble Hemingway himself.
